<image:title>Vertigo & TMJ - Your TMJs are positioned directly in front of your ears. When the TMJs are irritated or inflamed, this can extend into the surrounding areas.</image:title>
<image:caption>Within the ear canal, there are small crystals attached to a membrane and fluid which shifts about as we move our heads. As these crystals sense the changes in fluid movement, information is sent back to the brain from each ear to help us understand where our head is positioned in space and to maintain our balance. Vertigo occurs when these crystals are displaced and float around in the fluid, or when the surrounding nerves become inflamed and send misinformation to the brain. This results in dizziness, nausea, and sometimes ringing in the ears. At the Jaw Clinic we have Physiotherapists who have specialist training in the treatment of Vertigo. If you think you may have Vertigo, make an appointment NOW.</image:caption>

<image:title>Anxiety & Jaw Pain - Did you know that anxiety and TMJ (temporomandibular joints) may often be related?</image:title>
<image:caption>In fact, untreated anxiety and chronic stress may result in chronic muscle tension and pain in the jaw, mouth, ears, teeth and sinuses. TMJ disorder stems from the strain of the temporomandibular joints. This joint is located on both sides of your face and is close to your ear. It is an intricate joint connecting the upper and lower jawbones, as well as the skull and spinal cord. When the TMJ joint becomes irritated and inflamed, blood flow is restricted, and pain may lead to headaches, neck tension, lockjaw, teeth clenching and grinding, or even tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Many TMJ sufferers develop additional stress and anxiety due to their ongoing search for answers and constantly dealing with pain that will not go away. Anxiety is a normal emotion felt by practically everyone. It can be difficult to manage all that life presents us and a surge of emotions and stress can quickly impede our ability to function and cope with everyday demands. Severe anxiety disorders may lead to insomnia, fatigue, and overall pain throughout the body, where anxiety and TMJ disorder inevitably become a two-way street. Through a multidisciplinary approach with your physiotherapist, dentist, dietician and massage therapist, help is at hand. As a member of the multidisciplinary team, a psychologist is able to explore your stress and anxiety and work collaboratively with you to help you understand and effectively manage your underlying stress and anxiety symptoms, thereby providing jaw pain relief.</image:caption>

<image:title>Headaches, Neck Pain & TMJ - Headaches and neck pain are commonly complained about amongst the general population.</image:title>
<image:caption>They can be caused by many different factors, such as muscle strains, joint stiffness, poor posture, hormonal changes, chronic health conditions or psychological stressors. There are several ways that TMD can cause headaches. The muscles of the jaw and face are connected to the muscles of the head and neck, and when these muscles are tight or strained due to TMD, it can lead to tension headaches. TMD can also cause headaches by referring pain from the jaw to other areas, such as the temples or forehead. If you have tried treatment before without much success, then it is likely that your jaw is the culprit contributing to your pain.</image:caption>

<image:title>Hypermobility & TMJ - Hypermobility can be a cause of Jaw or TMJ symptoms.</image:title>
<image:caption>In particular, HMJS (Hypermobility Joint Syndrome) and EDS (Ehlers- Danlos Syndrome) Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a genetic condition that affects connective tissue within the body, particularly skin, joints and the walls of blood vessels. Individuals with EDS present with increased flexibility, which can increase their risk of joint dislocations. Daily activities such as yawning or chewing cause the mouth to open wide. In patients with EDS, these end-range movements can result in spontaneous dislocation of the TMJ, leading to pain, limited mouth opening range, and clicking or grating sensations. We are experienced in supporting patients with EDS to manage both acute and chronic jaw pain. Importantly, we understand that EDS is a condition that impacts your whole body and take a holistic approach to manage your condition in a way that optimises your function and minimises pain.</image:caption>

<image:title>Traumatic Jaw Injuries - Traumatic injuries, such as jaw fractures or dislocations, can happen during sports, falls, collisions, assaults, or even as a result of major dental procedures.</image:title>
<image:caption>These may or may not require surgery or a period of immobilisation, depending on the severity of the injury. Imagine if you broke your leg or dislocated your shoulder. It is normal to expect a period of healing – maybe in a cast or a sling – followed by rehabilitation with a physiotherapist to help regain your strength and mobility and manage your pain. The jaw is no different. After a traumatic injury, you are likely to experience pain, weakness, tightness or stiffness, and this can increase your risk of developing TMJ dysfunction. Our team can help you recover from your injuries, and ensure your TMJ function is correct, so you are less likely to experience pain and dysfunction in the future. If you have suffered an injury to your jaw, make an appointment NOW.</image:caption>

<image:title>Grinding & Clenching - Do you catch yourself sometimes clenching your teeth together when stressed?</image:title>
<image:caption>Do you wake up in the mornings with an aching jaw? Has your dentist ever mentioned that your teeth show signs of wear from grinding? Teeth grinding (known as bruxism) can happen while you are awake or asleep, and is not always something you are aware of. If you have jaw pain, our physiotherapists will assess whether grinding is a factor. If you know you grind your teeth but do not have any jaw pain, it is still important to address as bruxism can affect the muscles around your jaw and the alignment of your teeth and TMJs, with studies showing a link between teeth grinding and the development or aggravation of TMJ disorders. Teeth grinding and clenching can be addressed in a variety of ways, such as your dentist providing you with a splint, or your doctor investigating and managing sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea. Our physiotherapists can provide advice, exercises, and manual therapy to help address underlying mechanical issues, and our psychologists can assist you to incorporate strategies that improve your sleep and stress management.</image:caption>

<image:title>Jaw Pain - Your temporomandibular joints, commonly referred to as TMJ, are a pair of complex joints that connect your jaw (mandible) with your skull (temporal bone).</image:title>
<image:caption>They are positioned just in front of your ears and are a workhorse, involved in everything from talking, chewing and yawning to making facial expressions and breathing Despite their importance in our everyday life, they are rarely thought of until pain or dysfunction occurs. Common symptoms of TMJ dysfunction (sometimes referred to as Temporomandibular Disorders, or TMD) include: Pain in your jaw, neck, shoulders, ears or head Headaches, ringing in your ears, or a sense of fullness or pressure Stiffness, limited movement or locking of your jaw A feeling that your teeth are not properly aligned when you bite Clicking, popping or grating when opening or closing your mouth Dizziness or issues with your vision. Viewed in simple terms, TMJ pain is like any other joint pain – it can be coming from the joint itself, associated cartilage and ligaments, overlying muscles, or referring from other areas of the body. It may also be impacted by other factors such as poor posture and joint biomechanics, chronic health conditions or psychological stress. However, because of the complexity of the joint, TMJ pain is often more difficult to manage than other joint pain, and dysfunction requires assessment and treatment from a suitably qualified professional. Our clinicians have extensive experience in helping patients understand, manage and recover from their jaw pain, and use a combination of advice and education, manual therapy, soft tissue therapy and exercise.</image:caption>

<image:title>Jaw Locking - At The Jaw Clinic, we are trusted by our clients to give immediate relief from Jaw locking.</image:title>
<image:caption>A locked jaw can be a very painful and frightening issue, and it is important to seek advice immediately to ensure you do not experience prolonged discomfort unnecessarily. TMJ dysfunction is a common cause of lockjaw. To understand why it happens and how to resolve it, you need to understand how the TMJ functions. Your TMJs are complex joints that combine both a sliding and hinging motion as you open and close your mouth. An articular disc sits within the joint and provides cushioning for this movement. If this disc is displaced from within the joint, it can cause the jaw to lock in a fixed open or closed position, causing pain and limiting activities such as speaking or eating. If you are suffering from an acutely locked jaw, please see our info sheet on the best thing to do at home to relieve your symptoms and make an appointment now.</image:caption>
